Core Textאֵלֶּה תּוֹלְדוֹת... וְלְמַעְלָה כְּתִיב וַיְכַל אֱלֹהִים אֶת כָּל מְלַאכְתּוֹ, וּמַה עִנְיָן זֶה לָזֶה? אֶלָּא יוֹם נִכְנָס וְיוֹם יוֹצֵא, שַׁבָּת נִכְנֶסֶת וְשַׁבָּת יוֹצֵאת, חֹדֶשׁ נִכְנָס וְחֹדֶשׁ יוֹצֵא, שָׁנָה נִכְנֶסֶת וְשָׁנָה יוֹצֵאת, וְאַף עַל פִּי כֵן אֵלֶּה תּוֹלְדוֹת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְהָאָרֶץ בְּהִבָּרְאָם.
English of Core Text: “These are the generations...” Above it is written “And God completed all His work.” What is the connection? Rather: a day enters and a day leaves, Shabbos enters and Shabbos leaves, a month enters and a month leaves, a year enters and a year leaves — and nonetheless “these are the generations of the heaven and the earth when they were created.”
