English of Core Text: A woman with her husband rises and does not descend. What is the verse? Rabbi Elazar said: “for she was the mother of all living” — she was given for life and not for suffering.
On the daf / in context: The name Chavah / “mother of all living” is used to support the principle that a wife’s status rises with her husband’s and does not fall.
Type of Learning: Custom (wife’s status rises with husband)
What Is Learned: A wife’s standing ascends with her husband’s; she was given for life, not for degradation.
