English of Core Text: It was taught: Shem was the youngest of them all, yet they are listed in the order of their wisdom. Know [this], for it is written “And Noach was five hundred years old and Noach begot Shem, Cham and Yefes”... it turns out that Shem was two years older than Yefes...
On the daf / in context: The order of the sons is not chronological (Shem is listed first though not the eldest) but according to wisdom/importance; the chronology is worked out from later verses.
Type of Learning: Custom (order of Noach’s sons by wisdom)
What Is Learned: Shem is listed first because of his wisdom, not because he was the oldest; the true ages are derived from later chronological data.
