English: “To keep alive with you” — “with you” means those similar to you, to exclude a treifah (an animal with a fatal defect that cannot live twelve months).
On the daf / in context: Because the Flood year lasted twelve months, only animals capable of surviving that span were to be taken. A treifah, which by definition cannot live a full year, is therefore excluded. The phrase “with you” further implies that Noach himself was whole; the same standard is applied to the animals.
Type of Learning
Custom (exclusion of treifah from the ark animals via “with you” and the twelve-month duration).
What Is Learned
Only whole, viable animals (not treifot) were brought into the ark; “with you” requires animals that, like Noach, could survive the full year of the Flood.
