Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: “You and your wife” — whereas at entry it is written “you and your sons and your wife,” this teaches that upon exit marital relations were permitted to him.

On the daf / in context: The change in word order (husband and wife listed together at exit) signals the lifting of the temporary prohibition that had been in force during the Flood year.

Type of Learning

Custom (diyuk from the differing sequence at exit versus entry).

What Is Learned

Marital relations, forbidden while the ark was closed, were permitted again upon exit.
