Core Text

English: “When I bring a cloud over the earth” — R’ Yudan in the name of R’ Yudan bar Simon: This is analogous to one who held a hot metal tool in his hand; he intended to bring it down upon his son, but instead brought it down upon his servant.

In context: The “cloud” of destructive intent is redirected; the rainbow appears as the sign that the full blow will not fall upon the world again.

Type of Learning

Custom (parable of redirected punishment).

What Is Learned

When divine anger gathers like a cloud, the rainbow signals that the decree will not become a second Flood.
