אַחַ֣ר הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֗לֶּה הָיָ֤ה דְבַר־יְהֹוָה֙ אֶל־אַבְרָ֔ם בַּֽמַּחֲזֶ֖ה לֵאמֹ֑ר אַל־תִּירָ֣א אַבְרָ֗ם אָנֹכִי֙ מָגֵ֣ן לָ֔ךְ שְׂכָרְךָ֖ הַרְבֵּ֥ה מְאֹֽד׃

After these things the word of Hashem came to Avram in a vision, saying: Fear not, Avram, I am a shield to you; your reward shall be very great.

אַחַר הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה — אַחַר שֶׁנַּעֲשָׂה לוֹ נֵס זֶה שֶׁהָרַג אֶת הַמְּלָכִים, וְהָיָה דּוֹאֵג: שֶׁמָּא קִבַּלְתִּי שְׂכַר כָּל צִדְקוֹתַי; שֶׁמָּא יֵשׁ בֵּינֵיהֶם צַדִּיק. לְכָךְ אָמַר לוֹ: אַל תִּירָא, אָנֹכִי מָגֵן לָךְ מִן הָעֹנֶשׁ; שְׂכָרְךָ הַרְבֵּה מְאֹד.

English: After these things — after this miracle that he slew the kings, and he was anxious: perhaps I have already received the reward for all my righteousness; perhaps there was a righteous person among those I killed. Therefore He said to him: Fear not — I am a shield for you against punishment; your reward is very great.

On the daf / in context: The classic midrash and Rashi place Avraham’s fear immediately after the war: fear of having exhausted his merit, and fear of having killed the innocent. God’s “I am your shield” answers both.

What Is Learned: Divine reassurance after military victory addresses both spiritual accounting (merit) and moral anxiety (bloodshed). The covenant vision of chapter 15 opens from that reassurance.
