וַיּוֹצֵ֨א אֹת֜וֹ הַח֗וּצָה וַיֹּ֙אמֶר֙ הַבֶּט־נָ֣א הַשָּׁמַ֗יְמָה וּסְפֹר֙ הַכּ֣וֹכָבִ֔ים אִם־תּוּכַ֖ל לִסְפֹּ֣ר אֹתָ֑ם וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֔וֹ כֹּ֥ה יִהְיֶ֖ה זַרְעֶֽךָ׃

He took him outside and said: Look now toward the heavens and count the stars, if you are able to count them. And He said to him: So shall your offspring be.

Core Text מַאי וַיּוֹצֵא אֹתוֹ הַחוּצָה? אָמַר רַב יְהוּדָה אָמַר רַב: אָמַר אַבְרָהָם לִפְנֵי הַקָּדוֹשׁ בָּרוּךְ הוּא, נִסְתַּכַּלְתִּי בְּאִצְטַגְנִינוּת שֶׁלִּי וְאֵינִי רָאוּי לְהוֹלִיד בֵּן. אָמַר לוֹ: צֵא מֵאִצְטַגְנִינוּת שֶׁלָּךְ — אֵין מַזָּל לְיִשְׂרָאֵל.
English of Core Text: What is “He took him outside”? Rav Yehuda said in the name of Rav: Avraham said before the Holy One, I have looked at my astrology and I am not fit to father a son. He said to him: Go out from your astrology — there is no mazal for Israel.
On the daf / in context: The physical “outside” becomes a command to leave the deterministic reading of the stars; prayer and merit can override mazal.
