א״ר חמא ב״ר חנינא, מפני מה מת יוסף קודם לאחיו? מפני שהנהיג עצמו ברבנות.

English: R’ Chama bar Chanina said: Why did Yosef die before his brothers? Because he conducted himself with authority (rabbanus).

On the daf / in context: The sugya is reading the order of the verse (“Yosef died and all his brothers”) as intentional. The Gemara explains the early death of Yosef as a consequence of the leadership style he adopted in Egypt; the same page later continues with the oppression narrative that begins once the protective generation has passed.

What Is Learned
