Parashas Shemos
וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אַל־תִּקְרַ֣ב הֲלֹ֑ם שַׁל־נְעָלֶ֙יךָ֙ מֵעַ֣ל רַגְלֶ֔יךָ כִּ֣י הַמָּק֗וֹם אֲשֶׁ֤ר אַתָּה֙ עוֹמֵ֣ד עָלָ֔יו אַדְמַת־קֹ֖דֶשׁ הֽוּא׃
And [GodcGod See note at v. 4.] said, “Do not come closer! Remove your sandals from your feet, for the place on which you stand is holy ground!”
Torah Temimah points to Ulla — Berachos / TT (verified).
אל תקרב הלום — אמר עולא: בקש משה מלכות ולא נתנו לו, שנאמר אל תקרב הלום, ואין הלום אלא מלכות.
English: “Do not draw near hither (halom)” — Ulla said: Moshe sought kingship and it was not given to him, as it is said “Do not draw near hither,” and “halom” means nothing other than kingship.
Custom
Chazal teach that Moshe’s approach was limited: the kingship he sought was withheld.
