The Complete Passuk

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהֹוָה֙ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה עַתָּ֣ה תִרְאֶ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר אֶֽעֱשֶׂ֖ה לְפַרְעֹ֑ה כִּ֣י בְיָ֤ד חֲזָקָה֙ יְשַׁלְּחֵ֔ם וּבְיָ֣ד חֲזָקָ֔ה יְגָרְשֵׁ֖ם מֵאַרְצֽוֹ׃ {ס}

Then GOD said to Moses, “You shall soon see what I will do to Pharaoh: he shall let them go because of a greater might; indeed, because of a greater might he shall drive them from his land.”

Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

עתה תראה — אמר הקב״ה למשה: חבל על דאבדין ולא משתכחין\ldots אתה אמרת לי בתחלה מה שמך, עכשיו אמרת למה הרעותה לעם הזה.

English: “Now you will see” — the Holy One said to Moshe: Alas for those who are lost and are not found\ldots You said to Me at first “What is Your name?”; now you have said “Why have You done evil to this people?”

On the daf / in context: God contrasts Moshe’s present complaint with the unquestioning faith of the Patriarchs, who never asked for the divine name or challenged the divine measures.

What Is Learned

Chazal read the opening of the new section as a rebuke that contrasts Moshe’s questioning with the silent trust of the Avos.
