Core Text of Chazal

Core Text — Zevachim 4b
לְכַפֵּר עָלָיו — לוֹ לְכַפֵּר וְלֹא לַחֲבֵרוֹ לְכַפֵּר.

English: “To atone for him” — for him to atone, and not for his fellow to atone. (The blood service must be performed with intention for the owner of the offering.)

Type of Learning

R’ Eliezer #2 (מיעוט) — exclusion from the pronoun “for him”: the atonement effected by the blood must be directed to the owner, not to someone else.

What Is Learned

When the Kohen performs the sprinkling (or related blood service), the intention must be for the person who brought the offering. Intention for another invalidates the required direction of the atonement.
