English: “From the herd” – to exclude a tereifah (an animal with a fatal defect).
Restriction safeguarding physical fitness — every animal brought to the altar must meet the required standard of bodily perfection.
Even though a tereifah is already forbidden for ordinary consumption, the Torah specially excludes it from the altar, teaching that offerings to Hashem must be whole and healthy in every respect.
