כאשר ייסר וגו'. תניא, ר' שמעון בן יוחאי אומר, כתיב כאשר ייסר איש את בנו ה' אלהיך מיסרך וסמיך ליה כי ה' אלהיך מביאך אל ארץ טובה, מלמד שלא נתנה א"י לישראל אלא ע"י יסורים ענין הדבר י"ל, כי מתכלית א"י אינו רק להתענג על טובה והנאתה אלא ללכת בדרכי התורה והמצוה [וכמ"ש בסוטה י"ד א' מפני מה נתאוה משה רבינו ליכנס לא"י וכי לאכול מפריה הוא צריך אלא אמר הרבה מצות אין נוהגות אלא בא"י אכנס ויתקיימו על ידי] ותכלית זו הודיעם הקב"ה קודם כניסתם לארץ ביסורים להורות כי תכליתה אינה רק הנאה חומרית.
English: It was taught: R’ Shimon ben Yochai says: It is written “As a man disciplines his son, Hashem your God disciplines you,” and next to it “For Hashem your God is bringing you into a good land.” This teaches that the Land of Israel was given to Israel only through suffering. The purpose of the Land is not mere physical enjoyment but walking in the ways of Torah and mitzvot; God showed them that purpose through discipline before entry.
