שְׁמַ֣ע יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אַתָּ֨ה עֹבֵ֤ר הַיּוֹם֙ אֶת־הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן לָבֹא֙ לָרֶ֣שֶׁת גּוֹיִ֔ם גְּדֹלִ֥ים וַעֲצֻמִ֖ים מִמֶּ֑ךָּ עָרִ֛ים גְּדֹלֹ֥ת וּבְצֻרֹ֖ת בַּשָּׁמָֽיִם׃

Hear, O Israel! You are about to cross the Jordan to go in and dispossess nations greater and more populous than you: great cities with walls sky-high;

ובצורות בשמים. עיין לפנינו בפסוק כזה ר"פ דברים (א' כ"ח) וצרף לכאן.

English: “And fortified up to the heavens” — Torah Temimah points to the parallel phrase at the opening of Devarim (1:28) and instructs to join the derasha there to this verse. The exaggerated height of the Canaanite cities is the same rhetorical figure in both places.
