English: Rav Yosef taught: “Which you broke, and you shall place them in the ark” — this teaches that the tablets and the fragments of the tablets both rest in the ark. From here: a Torah scholar who forgot his learning through circumstances beyond his control — one does not treat him with contempt (even privately; in public, respect for the Torah restrains contempt even when the forgetting was negligent).
On the daf / in context: Menachot 99a; Moed Katan 17a.
Type of Learning
Custom (broken tablets in the ark; respect for one who forgot Torah)
What Is Learned
Broken tablets remain sacred in the ark; likewise one must not disgrace a scholar who lost his learning under duress.
