At that time GOD set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the Ark of GOD’s Covenant, to stand in attendance upon GOD, and to bless in God’s name, as is still the case.
את שבט הלוי. תניא, כל המקודש מחבירו קודם לחבירו, לוי קודם לישראל, שנאמר בעת ההיא הבדיל ה' את שבט הלוי לשאת את ארון ברית ה' ענין ההקדמה הוא חלוקת הכבוד בכל דבר שבקדושה וכמו בכהן כמבואר לפנינו בר"פ אמור בפסוק וקדשתו, ולענין קדושת הלוי בזה"ז נבאר לקמן בפ' ראה (י"ב י"ט).
English: It was taught: Whoever is more sanctified than his fellow takes precedence over him. A Levi precedes a Yisrael, as it is said, “At that time Hashem set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the covenant of Hashem.” Precedence applies in matters of sacred honor, parallel to “you shall sanctify him” for the kohen.
