Parashas Eikev · Passuk 10:12
And now, O Israel, what does the ETERNAL your God demand of you? Only this: to revere the ETERNAL your God, to walk only in divine paths, to love and to serve the ETERNAL your God with all your heart and soul,
Torah Temimah points to Shabbat 31b.
TT lemma: כי אם ליראה (unit 4 of 4).
English: R’ Yochanan said in the name of R’ Elazar: The Holy One has nothing in His world but fear of Heaven alone, as it is said “What does Hashem your God ask of you but to fear Hashem,” and (Iyov) “Behold (hen), fear of Hashem is wisdom” — in Greek hen means “one.” Linked to “everything in Heaven’s hands except fear”: the one trait God released fully into human hands is yirah. A scholar without fear is like grain stored without preservative — better not stored at all.
Custom (yirah as God’s sole “possession” in the world of choice)
Fear of Heaven is the unique human contribution God awaits; Torah without it is incomplete.
