Sifrei Devarim 301

Core Text

English: “And the Egyptians dealt ill with us” — as it is said, “Come, let us deal wisely with him, lest he multiply, and it come to pass that when war occurs….”

In Sifrei: Each phrase of the bikkurim declaration is anchored to a concrete verse in the Egyptian narrative. “They dealt ill with us” is identified with the royal decree of strategic oppression in Shemos 1:10.

Type of Learning

Custom (scriptural cross-reference / gezerah of narrative).

What Is Learned

The declaration’s first clause is not vague; it points to the specific plan of the Egyptians to reduce Israel by calculated affliction.
