Core Text
מַעְשַׂר תְּבוּאָתְךָ – רִבָּה. אֵין לִי אֶלָּא מַעְשַׂר עָנִי שֶׁבּוֹ דִּבֵּר הַכָּתוּב, מִנַּיִן לְרַבּוֹת שְׁאָר מַעַשְׂרוֹת? תַּלְמוּד לוֹמַר מַעְשַׂר תְּבוּאָתְךָ – רִבָּה.

English: “the tithe of your produce” — this is an inclusion. I only have the poor man’s tithe of which the verse spoke; from where do I include the other tithes? Scripture says “the tithe of your produce” — an inclusion.

In Sifrei Devarim 302: The extra word “produce” is read as expanding the confession beyond maaser ani to the full set of separations.

Type of Learning

Custom (phrase-by-phrase or midrashic expansion of the verse).

What Is Learned

The midrash extracts concrete legal, historical or theological referents from the wording of the passuk, giving the brief biblical language a fuller operational meaning.
