English: “The hidden things belong to Hashem our God, but the revealed things belong to us and to our children forever, to do all the words of this Torah” — from this you learn that we are commanded to perform all the words of Torah forever. “The revealed things” — these are the mitzvot that were publicized; “the hidden things” — these are the matters of the heart.
The verse is read as both a division of responsibility (hidden vs. revealed) and an eternal obligation applying to all revealed commandments.
Type of Learning
Custom (phrase-by-phrase or midrashic expansion of the verse).
What Is Learned
The midrash extracts concrete legal, historical or theological referents from the wording of the passuk, giving the brief biblical language a fuller operational meaning.
