English: “For He is your life” — Rabbi Elazar said: It is forbidden to travel with an am ha’aretz on the road, as it is said “for He is your life”; if he does not care about his own life, all the more so he will not care about the life of his companion.

Because the Torah is one’s life, a person who has no regard for that life cannot be trusted with the physical safety of another. The verse therefore yields a concrete rule of caution about companionship on the road.
