Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: It was taught: From where do we know that honey is a liquid? As it is said “He made him suck honey from the rock.”

The classical source expands or derives a specific point from the language of the passuk. The Core Text above is the relevant region of interest.

Type of Learning

Custom (A halakhic classification derived from the verb of nursing/suckling applied to honey.)

What Is Learned

Because the Torah uses the language of nursing (“vayenikehu”) for honey, honey is counted among the seven liquids that render food susceptible to impurity. The verse supplies the scriptural basis for that status.
