Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: The Sages taught: When there is a plague in the city, gather in your feet [stay indoors], as it is said “Outside the sword will bereave, and indoors terror.”

The classical source expands or derives a specific point from the language of the passuk. The Core Text above is the relevant region of interest.

Type of Learning

Custom (A practical directive for times of epidemic drawn from the verse’s description of danger both outside and inside.)

What Is Learned

The verse’s pairing of external sword and internal terror is applied to a city struck by plague: one should limit movement outdoors. The Torah’s language itself supplies the counsel of caution.
