Core Text

English: “By their families they went out” — R’ Chiya bar Abba said: By their families they went out of the ark — because they preserved their lineages they merited to be saved from the ark.

On the daf / in context: The orderly exit “by families” is attributed to the animals (and humans) having kept the temporary prohibition on marital relations; those that violated it were punished (Cham, the dog, the raven).

Type of Learning

Custom (merit of preserving lineage / abstaining during the Flood year).

What Is Learned

Those who preserved their family purity during the year in the ark merited an orderly exit by families.
