וַיִּקְרָ֤א מֶֽלֶךְ־מִצְרַ֙יִם֙ לַֽמְיַלְּדֹ֔ת וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָהֶ֔ן מַדּ֥וּעַ עֲשִׂיתֶ֖ן הַדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֑ה וַתְּחַיֶּ֖יןָ אֶת־הַיְלָדִֽים׃

So the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and said to them, “Why have you done this thing, letting the boys live?”

English: “Why have you done this” — \ldots He said to them: Why did you spare the children.

On the midrash / in context: Pharaoh’s interrogation is expanded; the midwives’ fear of God (already in the TT unit on 1:17) is the background to their standing firm under questioning.
