וַיָּ֧שׇׁב מֹשֶׁ֛ה אֶל־יְהֹוָ֖ה וַיֹּאמַ֑ר אֲדֹנָ֗י לָמָ֤ה הֲרֵעֹ֙תָה֙ לָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֔ה לָ֥מָּה זֶּ֖ה שְׁלַחְתָּֽנִי׃

Then Moses returned to GOD and said, “O my Sovereign, why did You bring harm upon this people? Why did You send me?

למה הרעתה —\ldots אמר לפניו: רבון העולמים, למה הרעות לעם הזה.

English: “Why have You done evil” — \ldots He said before Him: Master of the worlds, why have You done evil to this people.

On the midrash / in context: Moshe’s protest is the immediate background to the divine response of 6:1; the midrash preserves the force of the complaint.
