Core Text of Chazal

Core Text — Kiddushin 36a (Mishnah + opening)

English: Mishnah: The leanings (semichos), the wavings, the presentations, the handfuls, the burnings, the bird-killings, the receivings [of the blood], and the sprinklings apply to men and not to women… Gemara: Leanings — as it is written “Speak to the children of Israel… and he shall lean” — the sons of Israel lean, and the daughters of Israel do not lean.

Type of Learning

R’ Eliezer #2 (מיעוט) — exclusion from the wording “Bnei Yisrael” (sons of Israel, not daughters) applied to the formal sacrificial acts listed in the Mishnah.

What Is Learned

Semicha (and the parallel avodos named in the Mishnah) is required of men and not of women. A woman may still perform semicha on her own offering if she wishes; she is simply not obligated.
