Core Text of Chazal

Core Text — Bechoros 41b

English: “Male” — male and not female. And why does the Torah state below as well “a male he shall bring”? To exclude a tumtum and an androgynous.

Type of Learning

R’ Eliezer #2 (מיעוט) / double statement — the repeated requirement of “male” excludes animals of doubtful or dual sex (tumtum and androgynous).

What Is Learned

Only a clearly male animal is eligible for this olah from the herd. A tumtum or androgynous is disqualified.
