The Complete Passuk

… for an olah — a male without blemish he shall bring it.

Source

Sifra (Toras Kohanim) on “male” and “temim”.

The Midrash (longer context)

Core Text

English: “Male” — to exclude a tumtum and an androginos. “Without blemish he shall bring it” — without blemish he shall consecrate it.

In Sifra: The explicit requirement of a male excludes animals of indeterminate or dual sex. The phrase “temim yakrivenu” is read as applying both to the moment of offering and to the earlier act of dedication: one must dedicate an unblemished animal and bring it while still unblemished.

Type of Learning

R’ Eliezer #2 (מיעוט) + procedural scope of “temim”.

What Is Learned

Only a clearly male, unblemished animal may be both dedicated and offered as a flock olah; tumtum, androginos, and animals that become blemished after dedication are excluded.
