English: “Parched with fire” — the term does not mean the grain itself is roasted in an open flame. How then? There was a tube of the grain-parchers, perforated like a sieve, so that the fire could act upon the whole of it.
In Sifra / Menachos: Because the ears are still moist (“aviv”), they cannot be milled until they have been dried in a specially perforated roasting tube that allows even exposure to heat. Only then are they ground into the required “geres karmel.”
