EXTRA 1 — Vayikra 3:3 · Sifra

Sifra / Chulin 49b

Core Text

English: “And all the fat” — to include the fat upon the maw (R’ Yishmael); R’ Akiva says: to include the fat upon the intestines.

In Sifra: The doubled language of fat on/around the innards is the locus of the classic dispute over which additional fat layers are burned (and forbidden for consumption).

Type of Learning

R’ Eliezer #1 (ריבוי) — dispute over scope of the inclusion.

What Is Learned

The shelamim fat-offering includes more than the obvious covering layer; the exact additional organ fat is subject to the Yishmael/Akiva dispute.
