GOD will ward off from you all sickness—and will not bring upon you any of the dreadful diseases of Egypt, about which you know, but will inflict them upon all your enemies.

, דאמר מר צואת החוטם וצואת האוזן רובן קשה ומעוטן יפה, ר' אלעזר אמר זו מרה ר"ל מדת הכעס, שע"י זה שופכת המרה ומקלקלת מרוצת הדם וע"י זה באים חלאים, ועיין לפנינו ס"פ משפטים בפ' והסירותי מחלה. ובפשיטות י"ל דכל הדורשים האלה דורשים הלשון כל חלי כמו שורש או יסוד כל חלי, וגם י"ל דדייקו הלשון והסיר, דלשון הסרה משמע שהמחלה מוכרחת להיות בכל אדם רק ה' יסיר אותה, ולכן כל אחד מפרש לפי טעמו ורוחו מה היא המחלה השולטת בכל אדם, וכן צריך לפרש בדרשה הבאה.
English: “All sickness” — Rav said: this is the evil eye. Shmuel said: this is [harmful] wind. R’ Chanina said: this is cold. Each follows his own view: Rav holds that ninety-nine die from the evil eye and one from natural causes; Shmuel holds that disease often begins from uncommon wind; R’ Chanina holds that all is in Heaven’s hands except colds and heat-stroke. R’ Yose b. R’ Chanina said: this is waste [of the body]; R’ Elazar said: this is bile (anger), which spills bile and disorders the blood. The language “He will remove” implies an illness that would otherwise be present in every person; each sage names what that universal threat is.
