You shall consign the images of their gods to the fire; you shall not covet the silver and gold on them and keep it for yourselves, lest you be ensnared thereby; for that is abhorrent to the ETERNAL your God.

Core Text

English: Our Rabbis taught: When they cast Chananyah, Mishael, and Azaryah into the fiery furnace, Daniel left that place. He said: I will go from here, so that they not fulfill through me “the graven images of their gods you shall burn with fire” — for Nevuchadnetzar had made Daniel into a deity (as it is written that they bowed to Daniel), and he would have been like “the graven images of their gods,” which this verse decrees must be burned.

On the daf / in context: Sanhedrin 93a.

Custom (aggadah — Daniel and the furnace)

What Is Learned

Daniel avoided being present so that the verse about burning idols would not be applied to him after Nevuchadnetzar treated him as a god.
