You shall consign the images of their gods to the fire; you shall not covet the silver and gold on them and keep it for yourselves, lest you be ensnared thereby; for that is abhorrent to the ETERNAL your God.
פסילי אלהיהם תשרפון. תנא רב יוסף, מניין לעובד כוכבים שפוסל אלהיו, שנאמר פסילי אלהיהם תשרפון באש לא נתבאר תכונת הדרשה, אבל מתבארה היא מתוספתא פ"ז בזה"ל, כל עבודת כוכבים שבטלוה נכרי יכול יהא אסור ת"ל פסילי אלהיהם תשרפון באש, את שנוהג בו משום אלוה אסור ואת שאינו נוהג בו משום אלוה מותר, ע"כ. וכפי הנראה כונת רב יוסף ג"כ כביאור דרשת התוספתא, אלא שבא הלשון והענין בקיצור.
English: Rav Yosef taught: Whence that a non-Jew can nullify his own god? As it is said, “the graven images of their gods you shall burn with fire.” The Tosefta explains: an idol that gentiles have nullified — might one think it remains forbidden? Scripture says “the graven images of their gods you shall burn” — that which they still treat as a god is forbidden; that which they no longer treat as a god is permitted.
