You shall consign the images of their gods to the fire; you shall not covet the silver and gold on them and keep it for yourselves, lest you be ensnared thereby; for that is abhorrent to the ETERNAL your God.

English: It was taught: An animal that was worshipped, if it was plated, the plating is forbidden [even for ordinary use], as it is written, “You shall not covet the silver and gold on them and take it for yourself” — unlike the worshipped animal itself, which is forbidden only for the altar.

Plating on a worshipped animal is forbidden for benefit; the animal’s own prohibition is mainly for sacred use.
