English: It was taught: R’ Meir says: Whence that a person is obligated to bless over the bad just as he blesses over the good? From “you shall bless Hashem your God” — for every judgment He judges you, whether a measure of good or a measure of punishment. The divine name Havayah alludes to mercy and Elohim to judgment; both appear in the phrase.
On the daf / in context: Berakhot 49b.
Type of Learning
Custom (blessing over misfortune as over good)
What Is Learned
One must accept and bless over harsh decrees as over kindness, reading both divine names in the verse.
