Parashas Eikev · Passuk 9:14
Let Me alone and I will destroy them and blot out their name from under heaven, and I will make you a nation far more numerous than they.”
Torah Temimah points to Berakhot 7a.
TT lemma: ואעשה אותך לגוי עצום (unit 2 of 2).
English: R’ Yochanan said in the name of R’ Yose: Every divine statement issued for good, even conditionally, is not retracted. As it is said, “Leave Me alone and I will destroy them… and I will make you into a mighty nation.” Although Moshe sought mercy and the decree of destruction was canceled, the promise “I will make you into a mighty nation” still stood in his seed — as in Divrei HaYamim: the sons of Rechavyah “multiplied upward,” midrashically more than six hundred thousand.
Custom (good decrees not revoked)
A divine promise of good is not withdrawn even when the accompanying threat is averted by prayer; it is fulfilled in Moshe’s descendants.
