English: R’ Elazar said: Greater is one who gives tzedakah in secret than Moshe Rabbeinu. For of Moshe it is written “for I feared the anger and the wrath,” while of secret charity it is written (Mishlei 21:14) “A gift in secret subdues anger, and a bribe in the bosom fierce wrath.” Secret tzedakah is portrayed as stilling wrath more effectively than Moshe’s prayer in that crisis. (Tosafot note this is not meant to deny Moshe secret charity, but to magnify the power of matan be-seter.)
On the daf / in context: Bava Batra 9b.
Type of Learning
Custom (matan be-seter vs. Moshe’s fear of wrath)
What Is Learned
Covert charity is praised as uniquely effective in turning away anger, even by comparison with Moshe’s intercession.
