את ארבעים היום וגו'. ת"ר, מעשה בתלמיד אחד שירד לפני התיבה בפני ר"א והיה מאריך יותר מדאי, אמרו לו תלמידיו, רבינו, כמה ארכן הוא זה, אמר להם כלום מאריך יותר ממשה רבינו דכתיב ביה ואתנפל לפני ה' את ארבעים היום ואת ארבעים הלילה וכנגד זה איתא בגמרא כאו שתלמיד אחד היה מקצר יותר מדאי, אמרו לו תלמידיו לר"א כמה קצרן הוא זה, אמר להם כלום קצרן הוא יותר ממשה רבינו שאמר אל נא רפא נא לה (ס"פ בהעלותך), ולא נתבאר בגמרא טעם יתרון הקצור והאריכות, ואנחנו בארנו זה בפסוק הנזכר בפ' בהעלותך יעו"ש.
English: Our Rabbis taught: A student once went down before the ark in R’ Eliezer’s presence and was excessively long. The students said: How long-winded he is! R’ Eliezer said: Is he longer than Moshe Rabbeinu, of whom it is written “I threw myself down before Hashem the forty days and the forty nights”? Conversely, when a student was excessively brief, R’ Eliezer said: Is he briefer than Moshe, who said “Please, God, heal her please” (Behaalotecha)? Length and brevity each have a Mosaic model.
