English: Abba Chanan says in the name of R’ Elazar: One verse says “You shall make for yourself an ark,” and another (Terumah) says “They shall make an ark.” How so? Here — when Israel does the will of the Omnipresent; there — when Israel does not. When they are worthy the making is attributed to them; when not, to Moshe. (Even if this ark for the tablets is distinct from the mishkan ark, the language pattern is treated as parallel.)
On the daf / in context: Yoma 3b.
Type of Learning
Custom (who is credited with making the ark)
What Is Learned
Attribution of the ark’s making shifts with Israel’s spiritual state: collective merit vs. Moshe alone.
