English: Yirmeyahu came and said: Gentiles dance in His sanctuary — where is His awe? — and did not say “the Awesome” (he said “the great, the mighty”). Daniel said: Gentiles enslave His children — where is His might? — and did not say “the Mighty.” The Men of the Great Assembly said: On the contrary — these are His mighty acts, that He restrains His anger against the wicked; and His awe — that were it not for fear of Him, how could one nation survive among the nations? We still use their formula; every generation confirms it.

On the daf / in context: Yoma 69b; Gittin 56b on “Who is like You among the mute.”

What Is Learned

Divine might and awe are redefined after the churban as self-restraint and the survival of Israel among the nations.
