Core Text

English: R’ Yitzchak said: Any year that is “poor” at its beginning becomes rich at its end, as it is said “from the beginning (mereshit) of the year” — written defectively — “and until the end” — an end that has a future. When Israel make themselves poor on Rosh Hashanah in the language of supplication (“entreaties a poor man speaks”), the year has a good aftermath — unless mid-year sins change the course.

On the daf / in context: Rosh Hashanah 16b.

What Is Learned

Approaching Rosh Hashanah with humble entreaty is a sign the year can end in blessing.
