Parashas Eikev · Passuk 11:14
IeI That is, GOD; Samaritan reads in the 3rd person. will grant the rain for your land in season, the early rain and the late. You shall gather in your new grain and wine and oil—
Torah Temimah points to Berakhot 35b.
TT lemma: ואספת דגנך (unit 8 of 10).
English: It was taught: R’ Shimon ben Yochai says: Can a person plow in the plowing season, sow in the sowing season, harvest in the harvest season — what will become of Torah? Rather: when Israel does the will of the Omnipresent, their work is done by others, as it is said “Strangers shall stand and pasture your flocks”; when they do not, their work is done by themselves, as it is said “you shall gather your grain.”
Dispute (R’ Yishmael / R’ Shimon — labor vs. Torah)
R’ Shimon idealizes total devotion with others doing the labor when Israel is worthy; “gather your grain” describes the lesser state.
