ושמתם. ת"ר, ושמתם – סם תם, נמשלה תורה לסם חיים, אמר להם הקב"ה לישראל, בני, בראתי יצה"ר בראתי לו תורה תבלין, אם אתם עוסקין בתורה אין אתם נמסרים בידו נראה דמדייק הלשון ושמתם דאינו מונח יפה על שם דברים, וכמו דדייקינן כזה בר"פ משפטים עה"פ ואלה המשפטים אשר תשים פריך בגמ' אשר תלמדם מבעי ליה, ובפ' ואתחנן עה"פ וזאת התורה אשר שם משה ובפ' וילך שימה בפיהם, יעוי"ש. ולכן דריש המלה כשתי תיבות ובחילוף ס' בשי"ן שמתחלפות מפני שהן ממוצא אחד, וכה"ג דריש לעיל בפ' ואתחנן בפ' הנזכר אשר שם משה, זכה נעשית לו סם חיים וכו'.
English: The Sages taught: “You shall place” (vesamtem) — a perfect remedy (sam tam). Torah is compared to a life-giving drug. The Holy One said to Israel: My children, I created the evil inclination and I created Torah as its spice; if you occupy yourselves with Torah, you are not delivered into its hand. The wording “place them” is midrashically split and read as sam tam, a complete medicine.
