Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: “When you sit in your house” — this includes the study hall. “When you walk on the way” — this includes traveling merchants. The words of Torah should be fluent in your mouth: when a person asks you something, you should not stammer but answer at once, as it is said, “say to wisdom, you are my sister.”

On the daf / in context: Torah Temimah places this derasha on Devarim 11:19. The Core Text is the words of Chazal (as transmitted in the source named above).

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Yerushalmi sugya) — not a formal named middah of the 13

Amoraic discussion in the Yerushalmi built on this passuk.

What Is Learned

Torah is for the house and the road; readiness to answer without hesitation is part of “teaching them.”
