על האדמה וגו'. אמרו ליה לר' יוחנן, איכא סבי בבבל, תמה ואמר, והא כתיב למען ירבו ימיכם על האדמה אשר נשבע ה' לאבותיכם וגו', אבל בחו"ל לא נראה דלאו דוקא רק פסוק זה היה קשה לו אלא עוד פסוקים כאלה כמו בכבוד אב ובשלוח הקן וכדומה, וחד מהרבה תפיס.
, כיון דאמרו ליה שמקדמי ומחשכי לבי כנשתא, אמר, היינו דאהני להו יש להעיר הא כמה ענינים יש שעבורם מאריכים ימים כמו כל המשלים פרשיותיו עם הצבור (ברכות ח' ב') והמאריך באמן (שם מ"ז ב') ועוד הרבה, ובמגילה כ"ח א' שאלו לריב"ז במה הארכת ימים והשיב להם מפני כמה מדות שנהג, וא"כ מאי קשה ליה לר' יוחנן, וגם למה לא השיבו לו מזה, וצ"ל דהשאלה ותשובה היתה באנשים המונים שאינם יודעים ואינם נוהגים בכל הדברים האלה, ובכ"ז מאריכים ימים, ואמרו דהיינו משום דמקדמי ומחשכי לביהכנ"ס, וכמ"ש בברכות י"ז א' הני נשי במה קזכיין באקרויי בנייהו לבי כנישתא.
English: They told Rabbi Yochanan there were elders in Bavel. He wondered, for it is written “that your days be multiplied on the land…” — but abroad? When they told him that those elders were early and late to the synagogue, he said: that is what helped them. Many practices are said to lengthen days; synagogue constancy is one the sugya highlights.
