Parashas Eikev · Passuk 11:23
the ETERNAL will dislodge before you all these nations: you will dispossess nations greater and more numerous than you.
Torah Temimah unit 1 of 1 on this passuk.
TT lemma: כל הגוים האלה.
English: I know only “these nations”; whence to include those who assist them? From “all the nations.” Here it says “all the nations,” while at the end of the section it says “you will dispossess great nations” without “all these.” Hashem will drive out all who rise against them — both the peoples of the Land and their helpers from other lands — but inheritance of the Land is only of its nations. [Sifrei]
Derash on the verse (Bavli sugya) — not a formal named middah of the 13
The Gemara uses this passuk in a sugya (proof, illustration, or dispute). Named as one of R' Yishmael’s 13 or R' Eliezer’s 32 only when that move is explicit.
“All the nations” expands the driving-out beyond the seven; inheritance language stays tied to the Land’s own peoples.
