Core Text of Chazal

Core Text

English: “To cling to Him” — is it possible to cling to the Shechinah? Rather: whoever marries his daughter to a talmid chacham, or does business for a talmid chacham, or benefits a talmid chacham from his property — Scripture accounts it as if he clings to the Shechinah. Parallel derashot appear in Vaeschanan on “you who cling to Hashem.”

On the daf / in context: Torah Temimah places this derasha on Devarim 11:22. The Core Text is the words of Chazal (as transmitted in the source named above).

Type of Learning

Derash on the verse (Bavli sugya) — not a formal named middah of the 13

The Gemara uses this passuk in a sugya (proof, illustration, or dispute). Named as one of R' Yishmael’s 13 or R' Eliezer’s 32 only when that move is explicit.

What Is Learned

Clinging to Hashem is enacted by binding one’s life and resources to those who carry the Torah.
