וְהָיָה֙ כִּֽי־תָב֣וֹא אֶל־הָאָ֔רֶץ אֲשֶׁר֙ יְהֹוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֔יךָ נֹתֵ֥ן לְךָ֖ נַחֲלָ֑ה וִֽירִשְׁתָּ֖הּ וְיָשַׁ֥בְתָּ בָּֽהּ׃

And it shall be when you come to the land that Hashem your God gives you as an inheritance, and you inherit it and dwell in it.

וְהָיָה כִּי תָבֹא אֶל הָאָרֶץ — אֵין ״וְהָיָה״ אֶלָּא מִיָּד. כִּי תָבֹא אֶל הָאָרֶץ — עֲשֵׂה מִצְוָה הָאֲמוּרָה בָּעִנְיָן, שֶׁבִּשְׂכָרָהּ תִּכָּנֵס לָאָרֶץ. אֲשֶׁר ה׳ אֱלֹהֶיךָ נֹתֵן לְךָ נַחֲלָה — רַבִּי שִׁמְעוֹן אוֹמֵר: פְּרָט לְעֵבֶר הַיַּרְדֵּן שֶׁנָּטְלוּ מֵעַצְמָן. וִירִשְׁתָּהּ וְיָשַׁבְתָּ בָּהּ — מִשֶּׁתִּירַשׁ תֵּשֵׁב.

English: “And it shall be when you come to the land” — the expression “and it shall be” indicates immediacy. “When you come to the land” — perform the mitzvah stated in this matter, for in its merit you will enter the Land. “Which Hashem your God gives you as an inheritance” — R’ Shimon says: this excludes Transjordan, which they took for themselves. “And you inherit it and dwell in it” — once you inherit, you shall dwell.

In Sifrei: The opening of the bikkurim section is read as both a promise and a condition. Entry into the Land is bound to the performance of the mitzvah that follows; the dual language of inheritance and dwelling further limits the obligation (and the promise) to the proper side of the Jordan and to the period after conquest and settlement.

What Is Learned
